Arnaud Kalimuendo Strikes as Nottingham Forest Secure Sentimental Win Over Malmö

“Champions of Europe, you’ll never sing that,” was chanted through the stadium as Forest followers reveled in another success against Malmö. Much has occurred since Francis's decisive header clinched the European Cup back in the year 1979, but the club continue to treasure those glorious moments. Equally, significant changes have taken place in the five weeks since the manager assumed control, with Forest appearing reinvigorated and securing a convincing victory courtesy of goals from Kalimuendo, Yates, and Nikola Milenkovic, boosting their hopes of advancing in the Europa League.

Building Momentum with Another Consecutive Win

For Forest, this result – against a Swedish side that had been inactive for nearly a month after finishing in sixth place in their domestic league – marked a third straight triumph across every tournament and added to the momentum gained from the previous week's success at Anfield. While this match was a re-run of the club's historic success in name, the encounter itself was free of any real tension or nerves.

This was an event dripping in nostalgia, an eagerly awaited reunion and the third competitive clash between the sides since the European Cup final over four decades past.

The home side leaned into the heritage, honoring the legends of 1979 by providing them, along with their visiting opponents, the red-carpet treatment. 13 members of the Malmö's team from that time were also in attendance. The two clubs shared a meal together prior to the match. Frank Clark, Colin Barrett and company received a rousing reception when they assembled on the pitch a quarter of an hour before kick-off, and a typically impressive display was unveiled in the home stand.

Remembering History

“May 30, 1979, John Robertson delivered the ball from the left,” displayed half of a giant tifo, in block capitals. While nobody required a reminder of what happened next, the remaining section was revealed as the squads emerged from the dressing rooms. “And there’s Francis,” it continued. A second brilliant display depicted Brian Clough observing proceedings beside his right-hand man Taylor on a bench at the Munich stadium.

Dominance from the Start

So, Forest had drunk in those wonderful recollections, but what about the showing on the evening? It was strong, as well. They were in complete control from the moment the forward whistled an attempt off target inside two minutes and built a 2-0 lead by the half-time interval. Domínguez sent an early header wide and then Abbott, on his maiden European start, tried his luck.

It seemed appropriate that Ryan Yates, who came to the club aged eight, made the initial breakthrough in the Malmö defense captained by their own academy product skipper, Jansson, previously of Leeds United and Brentford. The home centre-back Nikola Milenkovic saw a delivery deflect off a opponent and into the pathway of the midfielder, who swept home with his right foot from the edge of the box to score his maiden strike since March.

Another Goal Confirms Dominance

The scorer was involved in Forest’s next goal on the verge of the interval, too, his unmarked header parried by Malmö’s shot-stopper Melker Ellborg but Kalimuendo on hand to convert the loose ball from point-blank range. McAtee, the midfielder handed a rare start and just his second outing since the autumn, was the spark, lofting a delicious ball towards Yates at the back post.

A minute earlier, Callum Hudson-Odoi low effort was turned wide off Malmö back Rösler, the son of ex- Man City forward Uwe Rösler, and an unmarked Milenkovic also previously had a strong header smartly repelled by Ellborg, who returned in place of the former Villa goalkeeper Robin Olsen.

Malmö’s Difficulties

This was Malmö’s initial game since the Swedish Allsvenskan concluded on November 9th, and they found it hard to equal the home team's intensity. The Reds made it 3-0 when Milenkovic scored after his centre-back partner Murillo headed back a corner. The captain had a shot blocked, but the Serbia centre-back Milenkovic pounced on the leftovers.

Forest then pushed for more, with Hudson-Odoi dinking a right-foot shot on to the crossbar before Ibrahim Sangaré sent an optimistic effort wide from 30 yards. It was that kind of evenings. The manager, mindful of the upcoming domestic fixture here against Brighton, implemented multiple alterations from the team that stunned the Reds at their ground last weekend, when they also netted three goals, though he introduced substitutes and Igor Jesus midway through the second half.

Smooth Night for the Team

It turned out to be a flawless night for Forest. The coach could withdraw Murillo with the game long since boxed off and subsequently introduced 19-year-old defender Jimmy Sinclair for his senior bow. He discussed the Forest old guard supplying “valuable insights” at weekly get-togethers and, nearly fifty years on, the present squad showed they are capable of producing of excitement, too.
