Israeli citizens mark second anniversary of 7 October attacks as Palestinian ceasefire negotiations continue
Israelis have gathered throughout the country to remember 24 months since the Hamas-led offensive on October 7th, 2023, as talks advanced in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the war in the Gaza Strip.
The attack led to in excess of 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others taken away to Gaza as hostages. It was the uniquely deadliest day for Jews since the World War II.
Israel responded by launching a military offensive in Gaza which has claimed over 67,000 people, as reported by the area's Hamas-run health ministry. Its statistics are considered trustworthy by the United Nations and other world agencies.
"The aggressive enemies have struck forcefully, but they have not defeated us," the leader stated on Tuesday.
He also pledged to "realize all the goals of the war: the homecoming of all the kidnapped, the removal of the Hamas government and the guarantee that Gaza will not present a threat to Israel".
Remembrance Events Across Israel
The government authorities postponed official commemorations until October 16th - after the completion of the festive season - but ceremonies still were held across the country on Tuesday.
A memorial ceremony for the loved ones of people who lost their lives in the Hamas incident was held in Tel Aviv. Organized by the victims' relatives, it was televised across Israeli broadcast stations.
Some time earlier, a moment of silence was observed across the country.
Negotiation Discussions in Egypt
At the same time, the conflicting parties' negotiating teams convened in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh for a continuing round of third-party negotiations to examine the provisions of the proposal.
A senior representative involved in the negotiations revealed that an late session of mediated discussions began at 19:00 Cairo time.
The representative said the day's discussions concluded without tangible results, due to differences over the suggested Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas wants to ensure Israel does not resume hostilities after the opening period of the arrangement.
He added that the talks are "challenging and have still not achieve any significant progress," but noted that mediators are working hard to narrow the gaps between the conflicting groups.
Critical Issues in Negotiations
- A permanent truce
- The trade of the hostages still detained by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
- The withdrawal of troops from Gaza
- Arrangements for assistance distribution
- Post-war governance of the area
Public Reaction
In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square previously, young Hagar - whose brother lived through the attack on the gathering, where hundreds were killed and numerous more were captured by Hamas gunmen - told: "No place feels like home any longer and until all the hostages return none of us will be secure."
"Once we see everybody home once more, we can feel relief again. Then we can start to heal," she added.
Outside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's home in Jerusalem, people congregated to express their solidarity for the relatives of the captives. Israel states forty-eight remain in detention in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are thought to be alive.
Activist Atalia Regev explained: "We need do any agreement necessary for the hostages to return. But we sincerely need assurances that we will be secure."
Research now frequently demonstrate that around 70% of Israelis desire the war to conclude in exchange for the freedom of the captives.
Palestinian Conditions
At the site of the gathering, mourners came together to remember the victims.
From that location, the sound of Israeli air strikes and artillery could be heard just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where witnesses indicated the intense Israeli attacks carried on.
In Gaza City, attacks were noted in the dawn of Tuesday in the western district, Rimal and Nasr areas and in the east side area of that sector, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwestern area.
"Once the evening comes, the anxiety appears with it," evacuated Gaza City resident a mother, whose teenage son was lost his life by an Israeli air strike previously, shared.
"Me and my three children are fearful of the attacks. During nighttime we are lying together, holding each other, notably my little child who puts his face on me throughout the night."
"Every second we check the updates to see what happened. And I'm afraid that this halt will not be completed and that the war will return to us."
Health Situation
Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City said it had accepted the corpses of several people by the daytime, including several who lost their lives in an Israeli strike in the south part area.
Another medical facility in the southern city of that area indicated additional fatalities had been brought there. A person was killed by Israeli forces while looking for assistance to the south region, medics stated.
