Jailhouse Surprise: Brazil's FormerPresident Bolsonaro Faces Time Behind Bars

He contested justice and justice won.

Sixty days following getting a 27-year sentence for attempting to “eradicate” Brazil’s political system, ex-president Jair Bolsonaro at last looks jail-bound.

Expected Incarceration

The convicted instigator – who had been living under residential detention in his estate while a series of legal procedures and appeals play out – is largely predicted to be incarcerated in the coming days, amid increasing talk that he will be transferred to a notorious maximum security prison.

Previous Remarks on Inmates

Over Bolsonaro’s four-decade time in politics, the conservative ex- military man displayed little mercy for the country's jailed individuals.

“What’s the need to offer these lowlifes a good life?” he once pondered. “They should just get fucked, period. That's my opinion.”

On another occasion, Bolsonaro declared: “If you don’t want to finish there, the only thing required is to avoid rape, abduction or theft.”

Incarceration Destination Debate

However the idea of Bolsonaro himself ending up in the Papuda prison high-security prison in Brasília has shocked allies, a group of four this week toured the prison in an seeming bid to dissuade the supreme court from sending him there.

Senator Lucas, a lawmaker from Bolsonaro’s Liberal party who was one of the visitors, said he expected the septuagenarian figure to be incarcerated in the following week and a half and worried his assigned prison could be Papuda.

He asserted Bolsonaro’s acute digestive issues – the consequence of a life-threatening assault during the last presidential campaign – implied it would be dangerous to keep the one-time head of state there. “His condition is highly critical. He won’t be able to cope if they move him to Papuda … It will be dreadful,” he commented, who also voiced anxiety about packed cells and the condition of inmate food.

While visiting Papuda, Lucas recalled seeing cells holding forty prisoners: “It's virtually one meter squared per inmate.

“We conversed to the convicts and they protest, of course, of the terrible food,” added the senator.

Supporters Voice Concerns

The senator isn't the lone figure voicing opinions before the one-time head of state's anticipated incarceration.

Writing in a major daily, another ally, the former government official Fábio Wajngarten, deplored the “brutal” conclusion to Bolsonaro’s “spotless” time in office and claimed Brazil was about to witness “the largest political injustice in its past”.

“This is an injustice that eats away the hearts of many Brazilian citizens,” the former minister said.

Varied Public Opinion

That may be accurate due to the substantial backing Bolsonaro maintains on the right-wing. Yet his anticipated imprisonment has also gladdened the feelings of many others who believe he ought to be imprisoned for conspiring to block the incoming president from taking power – and additionally conspiring to have him killed.

Reimont Otoni, a congressman for the sitting leader's political party, commented: “Not a soul wants Bolsonaro to be placed in a dungeon. No one wants Bolsonaro to be placed in isolation. Not a soul wants Bolsonaro not to be fed or for him to have to lie on concrete. We desire him to obtain respectful care – but respectful treatment in prison. He cannot carry on being his personal jailer for his lifetime.”

He observed how Bolsonaro allies, who have long applauding the severe conditions of prisoners, had unexpectedly woken up to their entitlements. “Just now has the extreme right – which has consistently claimed that human rights are not for criminals – decided to tour a jail to find out what situations are really like,” he remarked.

“Bolsonaro is a offender,” the congressman maintained, but that did not mean he deserved “degrading, insulting handling”.

Likely Incarceration Environment

In spite of rumors that Bolsonaro could be moved to Papuda, which currently holds about thousands of prisoners, his expected assigned facility looks to be a nearby penitentiary for law enforcement and other “particular” inmates referred to as Papudinha (Small Papuda).

Its cells are much more adequate than those in the primary facility, although still a distant from the opulence Bolsonaro enjoyed while living in the impressive leader's home, approximately a short distance away.

According to reports, the accommodation Bolsonaro could anticipate inhabit in Papudinha is about 24 square meters – approximately the area of vehicle spaces – and features a 12 square meter WC with a water facility and a 12 sq metre veranda. “He could be allowed to have a set and even a small fridge in his room as long as they were supplied by his loved ones,” sources suggested.
