NY Unveils Reporting Tool for Residents to Report Immigration Footage Following Arrests of Four American Citizens

The state AG has rolled out a recent reporting form asking locals to provide images and footage of immigration raids throughout the state. This action comes just a shortly after a high-profile enforcement action rattled Manhattan's Chinatown, sparking large-scale demonstrations.

US Citizens Held In ICE Operation

A lawmaker revealed during a Wednesday press conference that four citizens were taken into custody and detained for "about 24 hours" following the enforcement action. Rallies erupted in the city on both Tuesday and Wednesday.

"All New York residents has the right to exist without intimidation," the attorney general declared in a statement.

"If you witnessed and documented immigration enforcement during the raid, I ask you to share that material with the authorities. We are committed to examining these submissions and investigating any violations of law."

Submission Process

The portal includes spaces to submit images and video footage of the incident, plus a area to indicate location information. Before submitting, individuals must mark a box that states that "authorities could utilize any evidence provided in a legal proceeding, including in a legal proceeding or official statement."

Details of the ICE Action

The Manhattan operation, which witnesses say included over fifty government officers, occurred in a popular neighborhood of the city where imitation purses, items, goods and other goods are commonly traded in large quantities – typically to visitors.

Videos of the operation show several hooded and equipped federal agents zip-tying and detaining a person, and shoving away bystanders. Throngs of New Yorkers followed the officers through the streets. An military-style transport was noticed moving along the Manhattan avenues.

Official Reactions

In a midweek briefing held with the New York immigrant rights coalition, congressman Dan Goldman, a Democrat, said that four nationals were arrested by immigration for about 24 hours and that there were "no conditions where US citizens should be taken for without cause." He noted the persons were released on Wednesday with no accusations made.

"The intent is obvious here. It is not to take criminals off the street," the congressman said. "This is a military-style operation to provoke unrest. It is merely a excuse to provoke conflict for federal officials to deploy the armed forces to halt unrest that they have created."

Broad Criticism

Fury over the ICE raid escalated – each of the political contenders criticized the incident, as did Governor Kathy Hochul.

"Yet again, the current administration chooses oppressive displays that generate terror, instead of protection. It needs to cease," one mayoral candidate wrote.

The city's advocacy organizations spoke out too.

"ICE descended on the neighborhood with armored transports, covered personnel and riot gear to go after local sellers trying to make a living. This raid had no relation to citizen protection and everything to do with terrorizing immigrant families and neighborhoods," stated the president of a rights organization.

ICE Policies

Agency rules forbids the arrest of American nationals and the organization has stated it does not take into custody US citizens. However, external research has found that over 170 US citizens have been taken illegally by federal agents during the period of the present government.

Ongoing Trend

Immigration operations have been rising in frequency in NY and around the country lately.

An October operation in the city center was the earliest reported action on an immigrant shelter of the current administration. Demonstrations targeting ICE are commonplace as are accusations of force and cruel conditions.

Latest, a submission provided by civil rights groups stated healthcare failures of women with child in ICE facilities.
