The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Shares He Has an Idea of How Pluribus Might Finish... At the Moment.

The creative mastermind did not foresee that his new science-fiction series would emerge as a massive hit. “God bless the fans,” Gilligan says. “I was surprised by the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”

With the first season of the popular program coming to an end—and Season 2 officially in the works—Gilligan and his team recently discussed the fan response and whether it will impact the storyline of Pluribus.

Regarding the Incredible Fan Response

Anyone might to get swayed by the rampant praise and online debates about Pluribus. He is making a conscious effort to avoid both.

“It's like being force fed your favorite dessert and being laughing uncontrollably,” he says. “It's wonderful, but I get wind of it anecdotally, and that's on purpose. Never in my life looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever intend to. It's quite the opposite. It's a bottomless pit I know I would disappear down and then I'd be living in squalor from the hardware store and I'd never leave my living room.”

In spite of Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no way to avoid the immensely favorable response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to accept it graciously and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.

“We don't try to tailor anything,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not impacted by online forums.”

“It's wiser to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan concludes.

The Big Question: Does the showrunner See the Finale of Pluribus?

So if the writers aren't taking cues by public opinion, can we assume they have already decided how Pluribus will ultimately end? The answer is yes… with some caveats.

“There are some interesting ideas about where the show might end up,” he states. “however, we remain prepared to abandon a solid concept for a better idea. This approach has served us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we conceive of something superior and I suspect we'll be doing that.”

Alternatively, if they hit a wall, Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to fall back on.

“I keep pitching that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and the characters are inside it,” Smith jokes, “but no one is buying it.”

Alternatively, why mess with the classics?

“I want Carol to awaken beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.

Pluribus can be watched on the streaming service.
